How it works

Made for little hands: three steps a toddler can do alone, at the table, on the rug or in the car. No screen and nothing to set up.

  1. Turn it on

Flip the switch on the reader. It charges by USB and shuts off by itself to save battery.

  2. Slide in a card

Pick any of the 112 picture cards and put it in the slot.

  3. Listen and repeat

The reader says the word in English. Animal cards also play the real animal sound. Press the repeat button to hear it again, and choose from 5 volume levels.

Flip a card.

Each card has something to show you.

See it. Hear it. Hold it. Know it.

Every card teaches a word four ways at once. Pick the view that fits you.

See it Visual

Real pictures, real words.

Every card pairs a clear picture with its printed word, and each of the 12 themes has its own color, so animals, fruit and vehicles are easy to tell apart.

Hear it Auditory

A patient voice, every single time.

One press repeats the word as often as they ask, in a clear American accent. No pressure to say it right: the reader never corrects, sighs or rushes.

Hold it Tactile

Their first words, in their own hands.

They slide the card in and press the buttons themselves. No reading, no app and no screen, just a picture, a word and a sound.

Know it Cognitive

Picture, word and sound, connected.

Seeing the tomato while hearing “tomato” gives each word something to hold on to. If your child sees a speech therapist, it’s an easy way to keep practicing between sessions.

Up close.

What you get, detail by detail.

  • Cards go in from the top

Slide a card into the slot: the picture fills the window and the word plays out loud. With no card in, the window is plain pink. There's no screen.

  • Two buttons, that's all

One repeats the word as often as they ask. The other sets the volume, with 5 levels. The small light means it's on.

  • A speaker on the back

Clear American English, said the same way every time. Animal cards also play the real animal sound.

  • 112 cards, 224 words

Two words on every card, in 12 color-coded themes, so animals, fruit and vehicles are easy to tell apart.

Questions before you buy

When will it arrive?

Shipping is free to the contiguous United States. Orders ship from a U.S. warehouse within 1 to 2 business days and take 3 to 6 business days to arrive after that, so most orders arrive within 4 to 8 business days. You get a tracking number by email when it ships. Read the shipping policy.

What if it's not right for us?

You have 30 days from delivery to return it unused for a full refund of the product price; return shipping is paid by you. If it arrives damaged or stops working within 30 days, email us a photo and we'll send a free replacement or refund you, with no need to send it back. Read the return policy.

Will my toddler actually use it, or will it end up in a drawer?

It's built so a 1 to 4 year old can run it alone: pick a card, push it in, hear the word. No menus, no reading, nothing for you to set up. The repeat button and the real animal sounds are the parts kids go back to on their own.

Isn't this just another screen?

No. There's no screen, no apps, no ads and no Wi-Fi. Just a picture, a word and a sound. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises avoiding screen media other than video chatting for children under 18 months (source). It's quiet play time you don't have to feel guilty about, at home or on the go.

Is my child the right age for it?

It's made for ages 1 to 4, so it grows with them. Younger toddlers love pressing the buttons and hearing each word. Older ones start trying to say the word before the reader does. We recommend an adult nearby.

English isn't our first language at home. Will it still help?

That's exactly where it shines. Every word is spoken in a clear, standard American accent, the same way every time, as often as your child wants to hear it. Everything is in English; there is no Spanish audio.

My child sees a speech therapist. Can we use it at home?

Yes. It's an easy way to keep practicing naming words between sessions, without pressure: the reader never corrects, sighs or rushes. It doesn't replace therapy, so ask your therapist which cards to start with.

Will the battery die halfway through a car ride?

Up to 4 hours of play per charge, and it recharges with the included USB cable. It turns itself off when play stops, so it doesn't drain in the diaper bag. Charge it for at least 30 minutes before the first use.

Is it going to be loud?

Only as loud as you want. There are 5 volume levels, so it works in the car, at a restaurant or next to a sleeping sibling.

Will the cards survive little hands?

They're made to be handled. Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth, and small scratches don't stop them from working.

What's in the box, and does it make a good gift?

The reader in blue, green or pink, 112 picture cards with 224 words across 12 themes (animals, fruit, vegetables, everyday objects and more) and a USB cable, plus a free printable Ways to Play guide that we email with your order. After a short first charge it's ready to play, which makes it an easy gift for birthdays, holidays or a new big brother or sister.

I'm a teacher or therapist. How would I use it?

Pull cards by theme for circle time, learning centers or naming practice. The reader gives the same model pronunciation on every repetition, so you don't have to say each word twenty times, and it never corrects, which keeps hesitant speakers relaxed. It's also easy to send home: no app, no account, just charge and play.
